Top Tips For Hiding Those Outdoor Eyesores

We often spend so much time trying to make the interior of our house look good that we forget about the outside, and unfortunately there are a fair few eyesores that need to be taken care of. Things like garbage bins and large poles can’t be removed, and so we have to find a way to make them less distracting. We’ve rounded up a few tips for covering those outdoor uglies and giving your home’s exterior a much-needed makeover.

Rubbish and recycling bins

They’re one of the most important parts of a house and also one that no one wants to see. The oversized rubbish and recycling bins that wait patiently outside our house to be filled to the brim are serious eyesores, but there are ways around that. Consider blocking them from view with a lattice or screen of some sort. You might even like to fence them in their own area with a paved floor and gate for more discretion.

Air conditioning units

When summer rolls around, we’re certainly grateful for our air conditioning, but sometimes the huge boxes that are mounted to the outside walls can be a real turn off. Depending on the regulations surrounding ventilation, you may be able to use a lattice fence or metal screen box to cover yours. You’ll need to be sure it’s up to code though, and won’t overheat the unit in the process.

Hot water tank and water meter

Just like our bins, the hot water tank is a necessity that seems to stand out quite a bit. Try covering it with a screen or fencing, and choose a material that helps it to blend in with the house and the rest of the landscaping. You’ll want to be able to have access to it still so don’t block it off completely. Keep the water meter covered with an oversized fake rock that can easily be shifted when it comes time to read it.

Fences and walls

There are no two ways around it; some fences and walls are downright ugly. If you have an unfortunate structure like this in your garden, you might be able to get creative with it. Find creeping wall plants and vines that will eventually grow to cover and transform it into a living wall. For longer stretches of wall that need some sprucing up, insert a line of plants every few metres to break it up a bit.

Sheds and outhouses

Some people like the sight of a metal garden shed sitting in their backyard, but others find them to be a bother. If you’re in the latter team, why not let Mother Nature help you jazz it up a bit? Plant some creeping vines around and keep them maintained, so they don’t block off the door. It will help the shed blend into the garden and cool it down during the summer months.

However, there are laws and regulations about blocking these important posts so you won’t physically be able to cover them. To get the attention away from tall poles and complicated wires, try diverting the focus to something below. Try a decorative fence, bright garden, or amazing pool scene to draw the eye away.
